An electrical fire on board a passenger train 'backfired' through the system and cut its overhead power line while it was at Mana Station, producing a double hazard for passengers. Note the live high voltage line lying over the train. (Strangely enough, four nights earlier PVFB was training on Plimmerton station and discussing exactly how to deal with this situation.

PVFB going about the long process of dampening down a beach fire halfway between Plimmeton and Pukerua Bay - a 2km slog over broken beach and scree from the end of the road. Knocking over the 20m-long fire is the quick bit – ensuring that all the bits of driftwood buried underneath can't reignite takes time, given the huge amount of residual heat held by the beach stones. All it takes is a decent bit of wind and it would reignite.
